FREE QUILT PLANNING TOOL

How big will your quilt be?

Choose a block grid or fit whole blocks to a target size. This free calculator includes sashing between blocks and one equal-width border on each side. No account or purchase is needed, and your dimensions are calculated in this page.

Cloth & Colour · Layout diagram only. Not an actual-size cutting template. No yardage or individual-patch cutting chart. Sew a test block before cutting the full quilt.

Save, print or share your quilt layout

Copy plan link makes a link that restores the current measurements and units. Download PNG saves a 1200 × 1500-pixel image, ready to keep with your project notes. Download SVG saves a vector diagram that stays sharp when enlarged. Both include the dimensions, assumptions and source page. Everything is generated in your browser.

Choose Print / Save PDF, then select your printer or the PDF option in your browser’s print dialog. Letter and A4 are both suitable. The diagram is fitted to the page; its drawn size is not a fabric measurement. Use the labelled numbers for planning. Need an actual-size cutting template? Follow the making-book printing tutorial.

Use finished sizes in the layout

Finished size is the size visible after a block is joined to its neighbours. Unfinished size includes the seam allowance around the outside. With quarter-inch seams, a 10-inch finished block measures 10½ inches unfinished. The calculator adds two seam allowances to each finished block dimension; it does not calculate every patch inside the block.

The formula, with an example you can check

Finished width = blocks across × finished block width + (blocks across − 1) × finished sashing width + 2 × finished border width. Use blocks down and block height for the length.

For four blocks across and five down, 10-inch finished blocks, 2-inch internal sashing and a 3-inch border, the quilt finishes at 52 × 64 inches. Width is 40 + 6 + 6; length is 50 + 8 + 6. Sashing is only between blocks: four columns create three gaps, not four.

Target mode reverses that calculation, then rounds up to whole blocks. That means a target is a minimum, not a promise of an exact fit. For example, a 50 × 64-inch target with ten-inch blocks and no sashing or borders needs a 5 × 7 grid and finishes at 50 × 70 inches.

What this tool leaves out

This is a straight rectangular block layout. It does not include on-point setting triangles, pieced borders, extra sashing around the outside, quilt shrinkage, backing, batting, binding or fabric yardage. It is not an individual-patch cutting chart. Border-strip cutting lengths depend on your joining order and measured quilt top; follow the pattern and measure before cutting.

In centimetres, the default quarter-inch seam becomes 0.635 cm. If your pattern specifies a 0.6 cm seam or another allowance, enter that actual value. Measurements are displayed to at most three decimal places; use the precision your tools and pattern support.

From a block count to a full design

The free tool answers the size question. For a fabric mockup, custom blocks and a making book tied to the actual design, see Cloth & Colour’s desktop studio. Enter the chosen dimensions in your quilt setup, then check the app’s making plan for that specific block and construction method. The paid app is currently available for Mac; Windows is not released.

Next: draw your own block, plan a first quilt, or check actual-size printing. Always sew a sample block before cutting the full quilt.
